The project was one of the biggest within Northlake Subdivision, having a value of more than $7M.

The Phase 2 bulk earthworks were proposed over an area of approximately 43ha, requiring 1,082,000m3 total qty of fill moved. Initially, the project was programmed based on a duration of 2.5 years, but thanks to the efficiency of the team at Civil Construction, the works were constructed in 2 years, reaching practical completion in December 2019.

The project had some technical difficulties, such as in-situ materials encountered and the complex environmental risks. Civil Construction proposed to trial the use of various dust suppressants to mitigate the effects, ensuring maximum on-site effect specific to this site leading to best value for money for the Principal. Erosion Control – this was a big learning curve for all as this site was one of the larger earth worked subdivisions undertaken in the Southern Lakes which created its own inherent
issues. Civil Construction worked with our engineers and engaged third party professional advice to strategically implement silt detention ponds and forebays and use of flocculant. In-depth analysis of positioning the silt detention ponds for later use within civil works minimised future expenses. Another innovative approach was the straw mulch application, investing into new modern and efficient plant to primarily minimize silt migration, with the bonus of inhibiting grass growth and assisting in dust mitigation.

Civil Construction were very professional through the duration of the Contract, constantly monitoring the quality and safety aspects. They always followed industry best practice and did not doubt themselves in seeking for external advice when required to ensure risks were successfully managed and no issues would arise. It is also worth mentioning their effectiveness and professionalism working in such a complex site with plenty of neighbouring properties and other parties present. Regarding the environmental approach, it was a clear demonstration of their collective skills, capabilities and commitment to smartly overcome any challenges and achieving great outcome.

An outstanding job. I am delighted with the outcome. We had a number of senior management visit the site when they were down here recently and whilst they didn't pass too much comment on the actual install, the important issue was that the job was completed safely.

Civil Construction was highly motivated from the start of the project, implementing a seven day working week in order to achieve construction milestone, a key factor in maintaining production targets and keeping the project on programme. The team remained focused on safety throughout the contract and engaged in effective communication to resolve constructability issues that invariably arise on projects of this magnitude and diversity. The construction crews applied their technical expertise and adopted best industry practice to achieve the desired results.

Civil Construction completed the wall in a timely manner and with great workmanship. Given the wall is going to be visible after completion we were concerned about the visual impact of the wall. Given the high standards the wall was competed to, it has become something of a feature of the subdivision.

The work was reasonably challenging due to the lack of existing as-built information, the high inflows that needed to be catered for after rain and the work being carried out in winter when ground conditions were wet.

Civil Construction completed this work to a high standard. I would be happy to work with them again on future construction projects.

Civil Construction have delivered a quality product in a timely manner that has exceeded our expectation. Throughout the complex work teh hostel did not receive a single noise complaint relating to the work. This speaks volumes to the careful planning and professional execution of the complex methodology. We take pleasure in putting our name to their submission for this award.

We were fortunate enough to have Civil Construction closely involved in our earthquake repairs.  Specifically, they replaced one retaining wall, repaired another retaining wall, replaced many of our drains and replaced a drive. These jobs were made more difficult by a steep site and problematic access.

Overall, we were very impressed with the professionalism and strong work ethic of the team. Civil Construction persevered with our repair, despite insurance hold ups that caused them inconvenience.  We greatly appreciated this, as otherwise our return to our home would have been substantially delayed. They seemed undeterred by working outside over three consecutive days of sleet, and I gather that no days were lost on the job through their fault. We were also happy with the high level of input from the team leader, Peter Vaughan.  He seemed to be always on site, either working directly himself or closely monitoring the work of others, to make sure that a high quality job resulted.  In particular, our new retaining wall is a source of pride and beauty.  We assume that it is not usual for people to feel so positive about their retaining walls! Our neighbors have been so impressed with this retaining wall, that I gather that Civil Construction now have contracts to replace retaining walls for at least two of our neighbors.  Our drive behind our house is now able to withstand torrential rain and hail, and drain completely and immediately.  Finally, we were happy to have Civil Construction working on our site.  They were friendly, offered sound advice, communicated well and were considerate towards our neighbors and ourselves.

ECI & Collaboration at a 173-lot subdivision with pumping station

Early in 2018 we started an early working relationship with Civil Construction Ltd as we were applying for our Development Resource Consent. CCL reps were involved at an early stage of our design process and worked with us on the staging planning, timing and engineering issues. They brought practical experience to the table and continue to have a collaborative working relationship with ourselves and the project design team.

Our project is not an easy one as we have a working business on the site (Holiday Park) which is slowly reducing in capacity as the development progresses. There are many issues that arise around this and CCL have carried out their tasks with minimal disruption to our business next to the development.

Since engaging with CCL, we have completed Stage 1 of our development on time and budget and are well advanced with stage 2.

We believe the early contractor involvement with CCL has helped our project proceed smoothly and they have been more than helpful when we needed a practical solution to issues arising. We would have no problem recommending CCL for further projects.
